Borne from consumer and independent repair businesses’ frustration with manufacturer’s tightly controlled repair processes, Repair Act legislation is gaining momentum across the county. 27 states have some form of repair legislation on the books as of 2024. Proponents argue that stringent manufacturer repair programs limit consumer autonomy and contributes to significant electronic waste; opponents argue that an open repair ecosystem compromises safety, intellectual property, and disincentivizes R&D.

DOE Sued over appliance regulations

A consumer group from Texas and Louisiana filed suit against the Department of Energy over strict new appliance regulations for washers and dishwashers. The suit was filed on the grounds that Congress did not give statutory authority to the DOE to regulate water usage. Arguments from manufacturers and consumers concerned with increased cost and a reduction in product performance. The suit comes as the Department of Energy is rolling back the previous administration’s relaxation of efficiency standards and replacing them with tighter, more stringent standards.
